Children, Dogs and Improved Health


Here’s a fun fact: When infants and children are in frequent contact with dogs, they have a reduced risk of developing immune disorders including asthma and many common allergies. Scientists have wondered about the source of this benefit for a number of years. Recently it is looking more and more like the microbes that live in dogs can benefit us when they migrate into our own systems at critical periods in our development. Each of us has what is called a microbiome, a set of microbes that live in and on us. We have traditionally viewed these as threats to health, it turns out that many of them can play a critical role in our health.
